President Doris received this email recently:

Hello Doris.

My name is Jon Marks and I am the President of the Rotary Club of North Delta.

I am reaching out to you in the hopes that there are members in your club who are available and willing to consider participating in a valuable event at Sands Secondary School in North Delta.

The Rotary Club of North Delta is holding a Career Fair at Sands Secondary School in North Delta on Wednesday, February 5th from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm. The purpose of the Career Fair is to provide students at Sands with an opportunity to learn about a variety of careers/jobs which they may be interested in pursuing in the future. All of the students in grades 10-12 at Sands are expected to attend this event which is being held during regular school hours.

The Career Fair will consist of 15 “Information Tables” each hosted by a “Subject Matter Expert” (SME). The tables will be situated in the school’s gymnasium and students will be encouraged to go to the tables to learn about the jobs which interest them. The SME will be someone who is either currently performing the job, has recently performed the job or supervises people who perform the job. I am hoping that a number of the SMEs will be Rotarians.

Below is a list of the professions/careers which the students have expressed an interest in learning about at the Career Fair. The Fair will be staffed by 15 SMEs who will each host an Information Table.

Nursing
Physiotherapy
Graphic Design
Digital Marketing
Social Worker
Paramedic
Architect
Software Engineer/Programmer
IT Specialist
Electrician
Welder
Plumber
Carpenter
Auto Technician
Civil or Electrical Engineer

My Ask of You

Please share this email with your members and ask them to email me at jonmarks@telus.net if they are a Subject Matter Expert in any of the professions/jobs listed and would be willing to consider hosting an Information Table on February 5th at Sands. I will respond to the email and address any questions they may have. Hosting an Information Table is primarily about being at the table to answer any questions the students might have about their profession.

Thank you in advance for considering my request.

Best regards,
Jon

Don Funk awards

The Don Funk Awards were established in honour of the late Don Funk of the Abbotsford Rotary Club. He was an outstanding Rotarian and had been awarded the prestigious Rotary International “Service Above Self” award for arranging a large shipments of medical equipment to third world countries.

Last week the three Rotary clubs in Abbotsford gathered to present the 2024 Don Funk Award to a member from each club. The recipients this year were:

Darry Taylor of the Rotary Club of Abbotsford-Matsqui

Kris Foulds of the Rotary Club of Abbotsford-Sumas

Deanna McIntyre of the Rotary Club of Abbotsford

Thank you to President Doris and the other members of the committee from the three clubs for organizing this event. It was wonderful to see the room full and hear the buzz of many voices in conversation.
